Championing Inclusive Workspaces with MumPod – A Conversation with Ros McFadden
In today’s workplace, inclusion extends beyond policies and benefits. It involves creating spaces that accommodate diverse needs, from cultural practices to breastfeeding support. In a recent Inclusive Growth Show episode, I had the privilege of speaking with Ros McFadden, founder of MumPod and an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). Ros shared her journey in designing MumPod—a private, hygienic space to support breastfeeding parents returning to work.
The Need for Lactation Pods
Ros’s background in design, healthcare, and personal experience led her to identify a critical gap: workplaces often overlook breastfeeding parents’ needs. Many return to work only to find that the only available spaces for pumping milk are unsuitable, often lacking privacy, comfort, or basic hygiene. Such environments can impact both mental and physical well-being, sometimes resulting in parents ending breastfeeding earlier than planned.
Key Insight: One in eight breastfeeding parents feel forced to stop due to workplace limitations. This is a health decision no one should have to make due to a lack of support at work.
What is a MumPod?
MumPod is a self-contained, private room designed specifically for breastfeeding. These pods are cosy and practical, featuring adjustable lighting, comfortable seating, a clean work surface, plug points for breast pumps, and, in some cases, a milk fridge. The idea is simple yet powerful: a dedicated space that meets the unique needs of breastfeeding parents.
Impact: When employers provide dedicated spaces like MumPod, they foster inclusivity and demonstrate a commitment to supporting all employees’ life stages.
The Business Case for Lactation Pods
By helping organisations install MumPods, Ros has partnered with companies such as Apple and NHS hospitals. These organisations recognise that creating lactation pods isn’t only about meeting a legal requirement; it’s about supporting employee retention, well-being, and productivity.
For other companies, providing a lactation pod can also reduce the risk of attrition. Employees are more likely to stay with a company that shows care for their needs and provides the tools to balance work with life’s challenges.
How Companies Can Become More Inclusive
Ros highlighted a critical point: while some employers are proactive, the lack of regulatory guidance in the UK creates a patchwork approach to breastfeeding support in workplaces. She advocates for a change in legislation, but companies don’t need to wait for mandates to start supporting their employees. Here are some initial steps:
- Create a dedicated lactation space (like MumPod) that meets privacy and hygiene standards.
- Proactively communicate with returning parents about available resources and accommodations.
- Provide information on the health benefits of breastfeeding support and how it impacts well-being.
Let’s Build More Inclusive Workspaces
MumPod is more than a product; it’s a movement advocating for workplaces where every employee feels valued and supported. To learn more about creating lactation pods and fostering a truly inclusive workspace, connect with Ros McFadden on LinkedIn or visit MumPod’s website at www.mum-pod.com.
